Since the late 1980s, the researchers who are now part of TransArms have published several books and articles on the political economy of international freight transport, military logistics, transport networks of the arms transfers, the geo-economy of strategic materials, and the logistics side of wars and conflicts in Angola, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Chechnia, Nagorno-Karabakh. Part of these publications will be soon available for downloading on this website, pending permission from the respective publishers. In the last three years, TransArms has contributed to the activity of Amnesty International’ Arms Control Campaign (“Sudan: arming the perpetrators of grave abuse in Darfur,” November 2004; “Democratic Republic of Congo: arming the East,” July 2005; “Dead on Time; arms transportation, brokering, and the threats to human rights,” May 2006; “Arms supplies for the Israel/Lebanon conflict,” August 2006) and the Campaign Against Torture (“United States of America. Below the radar: secret flights to torture and disappearance,” April 2006). These reports are all available on Amnesty International website under their respective title |
Research, Publications & Services
Transarms electronic archive presently includes more than 40,000 documents dealing with arms transfers, wars and conflicts, transport companies, military and civilian logistics, transport networks, fleet of aircraft and ships, port and airport movements. Transarms library includes journals, magazines, reports, and books on freight transport and freight transport networks, arms transfers, national armies, intelligence agencies, armed groups, and warfare; transport and logistics companies directories; the complete list and fate of Soviet/Russia and Western-built aircraft; court documents on arms trafficking; arms manufacturers directories; infantry weapons encyclopedias; list and activities of more than one thousand free trade zones located in all the world regions. TransArms has developed and maintains a database on transport and logistic companies with military- and hazardous materials-related activities (LogTransDB) and a database on flows of commercial exports of infantry weapons and non-military firearms and parts thereof (MilTransDB). TransArms will soon publish on the web its annual report Ariadne’s Thread, a publication devoted to military logistics at global, regional and country level. TransArms provides consultancy to national and international bodies and organizations and offers training for their personnel, as well as for the personnel of public and private educational and research institutions.
